- Rhodium Plating
-
What is rhodium?
Rhodium is a rare, white metal in the platinum family. It is considered a noble metal which means it is resistant to corrosion and oxidation. Other noble metals include platinum, palladium, gold, and silver.
Why are other metals plated with rhodium?
Metals such as white gold and silver are often coated with rhodium after they are polished for a few different reasons. Pure gold (24 karat) is yellow in color and soft in its natural state. To be made into jewelry it is alloyed with other metals to harden it and make it into different colors. Even with the alloys mixed in the item will still have an under tone of yellow. As the final step in the making and finishing process the gold item is dipped in a liquid rhodium solution. This will increase both the final shine and lustre of the piece as well as add to its durability. In the case of sterling silver, rhodium is often added to help reduce the silver item from tarnishing.
Another advantage of rhodium plating is that rhodium is a hypoallergenic metal which means it is nickel free. One of the alloys used in white gold is nickel, which can cause some wearers to have an allergic reaction. The rhodium plating serves as a barrier between the item and the wearer making it easier to wear and enjoy.
Is rhodium plating permanent?
No. Like most coatings that are applied to products over time the rhodium will wear away. The good news is that it can always be reapplied. All that needs to be done is to have a professionally trained jeweler polish the piece of jewelry and then reapply the rhodium plating. This is usually done for a nominal charge.
